The celebration of the Sandurot Festival in November showcases the diversity of different barangays of Dumaguete. This celebration is filled with religious and cultural practices that has been passed on through the years here in Negros Oriental.

Sandurot Festival and its History

Dumaguete City is known as the “City of Gentle People” because of the hospitality they town has brought to all the visitors. Back in the days when visitors come, the town would welcome them and give snacks and beverages as dancers entertain the visitors. This kind of hospitality has spread though out Negros Oriental and even some parts of the world as the visitors tell stories of their stay.

From a derived Visayan phrase “pakig Sandurot” which means to join in, the Sandurot Festival was created.

The streets of Dumaguete is filled with colorful festival costumes and rhythmic music during the street dancing and showdown of the Sandurot Festival. Other events such as the search for Miss Dumaguete, cultural shows, live bands and fireworks display can be seen during the city’s glorious festival celebration. The Sandurot Festival is then concluded with a city fiesta where all people celebrate as they share their homemade goods on this feast.

Being the gateway and the capital of Negros Oriental, Dumaguete City plays an important role in promoting the island’s cultural heritage but most importantly, having their very own traditions and practices.
