Known for its great colorful sanctuaries and reef, the municipality of Dauin is rich in many water activities including scuba diving and snorkeling. Dauin located only about 15 kilometers south from Dumaguete City. Dauin is the home to the Kinaiyahan Festival and the Dauin Kalye Sayaw.
Brief History of Dauin
There are many stories whether how the town of Dauin really got its name. One of the common tale states that in an undiscovered little village, a tall majestic tree stood firmly. When the Spaniards started colonizing the Philippines, they asked what the trees name was as reference to the name of the village. The villagers said “Calawin”. In another connecting story, the town of Dauin got its name from the supernatural beings called “Dawinde” or dwarf, who is said to help the anyone who are in need.
What to See and Do in Dauin
Apo Island
The turquoise clear water of Apo Island is listed as one of top 10 best diving sights in the world. Small as it may seem, Apo Island make it up for its over 400 colorful species of corals and over 650 species of fish. Most of the 450 species of corals in the Philippines can be found in Apo Island. Thousands of tourists come and visit Dauin just to take a glimpse of the underwater paradise that Apo Island has to offer.
The 74-hectare volcanic island is also rich in many historical and cultural practices including town fiestas and gatherings. With only less than 1,000 residents on the island, the only livelihood available is fishing, tourism and a few extra from the resorts and restaurants.
Snorkeling and Diving
The coastline of Dauin is full of both public and private beaches and resorts. Dauin is truly blessed to give the different diving experience from artificial reefs, to sea grass, coral reefs and much more. Snorkeling in the shallows are also advisable especially in the sanctuaries. Just remember to bring your snorkeling equipment if your accommodation does not lend you one, the Bantay Dagat (Coast Guards) are quite strict in allowing swimmers with out proper mask and snorkle.
Aside from the exciting scuba diving and snorkeling time at the each, there are other things to do in the municipality of Dauin. One of them is visiting the Baslay Hot Spring and walking around the Dauin Central Plaza and the San Nicolas de Tolentino Church.
Baslay Hot Spring
The Baslay Hot Spring is also a great place for a healthy and spiritual relaxation. Enjoy the sulfur painting bath and refreshing cold water slides in the river areas. There are four small pool (more like a tub) with water pipes that pours in the hot water. It is located only about 10.6 km from the Dauin town proper. Habal-habal (local rides) are the easiest way to reach the destination.
