La Libertad

La Libertad, located in Negros Oriental, has the rating of a third class municipality in the area. It was in the 1919 that it got the status of a municipality. It is spread over an estimated region of 140 sq. km. The latest statistics about population suggests that the population density in the region is around 280 individuals per sq. km to an entire population of about 40,000 people or more because of a steady rise in population. The area is categorized into around 29 barangays.

La Libertad – A Short History

This settlement was known earlier as Hinoba-an, a Jimalalud barrio. It was renamed as La Libertad by the people to show its significance when the local inhabitants led an uprising against the brigands that used to raid from the north during those times. The locals also regarded the La Libertad as their symbol of liberty and freedom from the Tulisanes. ‘La Libertad’, the name, is also legendary for celebrating the acts of resistance of the local guerrillas when the Second World War was on. The municipality had a rural expanse. However, other than serving as a municipality, it became known as a parish in 1935. It has also seen many social and economic activities.

There is also the La Libertad technical vocational training institution. But there are also many elementary schools in this region – including:

La Libertad Economy

The whole area is engaged actively in producing food and agricultural crops like:

  • Copra
  • Corn
  • Soya beans
  • Peanuts

There are also huge sugarcane fields producing plenty of sugarcane. Topographically as well as structurally, this region has areas like:

  • Pacuan Valley
  • Daras-an Range
  • Bagtic and Eli plateaus among the Hinoba-an river
  • Marble, Pacuan and Danao caves
  • Mambulotan Springs

The last two features have been discovered recently, and these promote tourism as well as play a vital role in improving the area’s economy.

La Libertad – Places of Interest

It has many exciting vocational spots like the Francisco Absin Memorial Park that was the recipient in 1952 of theNational Community Beautification contest. Visitors can enjoy the scenic views of Marble Cave and Danicop Cave, the La Limar Beach Resort at San Jose that has swimming pools and serves as the venue for many government events as well as activities like weddings and family reunions.

Such activities promote tourism in this specific region and for the entire Negro Oriental area, thus making the place economically more valuable. Every 28th April, the Pandanyag Festival”, a grand annual festival in La Libertad is celebrated.

How to Go to La Libertad?

It is around 114 km to the north of Dumaguete City. There are many amazing sights and opportunities to meet.

One can go to La Libertad by bus. There is a single bus terminal in Dumaguete, and finding it is not tough. If travelers take a Ceres bus, they can take around 3 hours to travel. They will have to spend about Php (Philippine Pesos) 150.00.

Or they may take a Van for Hire (V-hire) to go to La Libertad. The V-hire terminal going north is situated close to the Ceres Bus Terminal, proximal to the latest Drive Thru of McDonald’s. They have to spend just Php 120.00 and reach the place in around 2 hours and 45 minutes.
