Having twenty-four participating barangays for the showdown and street dancing competition in Tanjay, one could say that you wouldn’t miss it. From gathering at 7am in the morning to the announcing o winners at 5pm in the afternoon, the city of Tanjay was filled with many viewers both locals and guests.

As faithful people, the audience and the barangay representatives were gathered at the Tanjay Gymnasium for the blessings of the priest before the dance. Since the dance is performed with real fighting scene, as tradition, the priest is urged to bless the dancers for a safe performance.

After being blessed with holy water, everyone hurriedly flooded the streets to watch the street dancing competition which started around 10:45 am already. The heat was on, yet everyone stood firm just to see the show.

The long street dancing parade already ended around two in the afternoon. Everybody had a short lunch break and it was back to the show. After weeks and maybe even a month, the most anticipated portion of the festivity is about to be seen…the Showdown!

As mentioned before, the showdown is composed of real fighting scene where the dancers fit each other’s shields and do thrilling stunts. Despite the dangerous scenes, not a single performer was injured. The celebration of the festival is based on thanksgiving to Señor Santiago (the city’s patron saint) who have saved and protected the natives from their enemies.

Even with being quite drained from the event, it was a festival worth watching for all.

Happy Fiesta Tanjay City and Viva Señor Santiago!
